What a Proper Stucco System Actually Is

Stucco is not paint and it is not a coating. It’s a wall assembly with layers, and every layer has a job.

A three-coat cement stucco system starts with a water resistive barrier over the sheathing. Then metal lath. Then a scratch coat, a brown coat, and a finish coat. Each coat has to cure before the next goes on. That’s why a full elevation takes days, not one afternoon.

Between the barrier and the stucco there needs to be a way for water to leave. Water will get behind stucco. That’s normal. The failures happen when it can’t get back out.

Why the Weep Screed Matters More Than the Finish

At the bottom of every wall sits a weep screed. It’s a strip of metal that lets trapped water drain out at the base.

Code sets a clear standard here. The International Residential Code section on exterior plaster requires the weep screed to sit at least 4 inches above soil and at least 2 inches above a paved surface like a patio or driveway. On a lot of the installs we get called to repair, that clearance is gone. Someone added mulch beds. Someone laid pavers over an old patio. Now the drain path is buried and the wall wicks moisture from the ground up.

4. Barrier, flashing, and lath. Kickout flashing at roof to wall junctions. Head flashing over openings. Lath fastened to framing, not just sheathing.

5. Scratch, brown, and finish coats. With cure time between each. We fog the wall during cure so it doesn’t dry too fast and crack.

6. Walkthrough. We go around the house with you before the last truck leaves.

About Weather and Timing

Cement stucco has to hydrate to gain strength. Industry standard specification ASTM C926 calls for application above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the work has to stay above that for 48 hours after.

That matters in Ocean County. We schedule cement work around the shoulder seasons and we will tell you honestly if a January start date is a bad idea for your project. Acrylic finishes have their own temperature rules. We plan around both.

Yes. We work Saturdays and Sundays from 8 AM to 7 PM, and weekdays from 6 AM to 9 PM. Weekend work is common on shore rentals where the owner wants the job done outside the summer season.

How long does a stucco installation take?

A single elevation usually runs about a week because each coat needs to cure before the next one goes on. A full house is typically two to four weeks depending on size, detail, and weather.

Do you install stucco in the winter?

Sometimes, with protection and heat. Cement stucco needs to stay above 40 degrees during application and for 48 hours after. We’d rather push a start date than hand you a wall that never fully hydrated.
